Slot Machine

Slot machine is entirely random

Slot machine, byname one-armed bandit, known in Great Britain as a fruit machine, gambling device operated by dropping one or more coins or tokens into a slot and pulling a handle or pushing a button to activate one to three or more reels marked into horizontal segments by varying symbols. The machine pays off by dropping into a cup or trough from two to all the coins in the machine, depending on how and how many of the symbols line up when the rotating reels come to rest.

How to Play Slots

Slots are very easy to play and in many cases they are automated and can be played without your assistance. The only thing you need to do is select how many lines you want to play, how much you want to spend per line and whether or not you want to include optional extras (such as wild reels, nudges, holds and more).

After that you just need to press “Spin” or click the “Auto-play” option, and the reels will start turning.

From there you can sit back and watch, and in most cases the game will play out before your eyes. In some cases you will need to get involved. This is the case with some bonus slots and video slots, where you will be asked to make selections, to choose from certain bonus round features, and to get involved in other ways.

The degree of interactivity changes from slot to slot, but they are becoming more interactive, more immersive and more reliant on your attention. Such is the case with games such as Beehive Reactors, where the bonus round is a side-scrolling mini-game where you fly, hop, jump and collect coins like you would in an old Nintendo game.

How to win at slot games

The size of your bankroll is crucial in helping you win at slots. The more money you have available, the bigger the chances of winning at this game. This is where taking advantage of casino bonus offers and promotions, can come in handy.

Some casinos go as far as to offer a 150% or 200% bonus, so you get quite a considerable amount to play with when making a deposit. Keep an eye on the wagering requirements, however, as they can make it difficult for you to withdraw money.

Go for the best Return-on-Player (RTP)

One of the things that many beginners don’t understand, is the fact that all casino games have a fixed payout rate. This means that over a period of time, the casino game returns a percentage of the money spent by the player back in the forms of winnings.

Instead of going by theme or flashy graphics, you need to find out this information before you start spinning the reels of a new online slot. Not all games have the same payouts, so you definitely should aim for a game that gives back the most.

Pick your games wisely

Similarly to our previous point, there are plenty of things you need to pay attention to. For example, three-reel slots might not have stunning graphics, but they are usually the best ones for players who play to win since they pay out on a regular basis.

These days, five-reel slots are all the rage. They offer exciting features and although they are enjoyable and highly entertaining, their payout rates tend to be lower than three-reeled slots. Jackpots games offer even lower payouts due to the possibility of winning big. This is due to jackpot games being highly volatile. By high volatility, we mean that a slot game might pay less frequently but when it does, the wins are bigger than average.

Even if you’re going after a jackpot, you should aim to play three-reeled slots, especially if you have a set bankroll. Games with lower variance are more likely to boost your bankroll.

Pick games with smaller jackpots

If you have to play jackpot games, your best chance of winning lies with smaller jackpot games. It is easier to win a jackpot that is small since the bigger a jackpot is, the worst are the odds of winning it.

Bet on all pay lines

If you have opted to play a 25-payline slot game, then place bets on all the lines if you can afford it. You could easily miss out on a massive payout, simply for not betting on all the lines. If you cannot afford the max bet of a particular slot game, go after another one.

Mix up your bets

If you cannot bet on all pay lines as previously advised, mix up your bets. If you are on a winning streak, then up your bets, but once you feel that your luck is running out, lower your betting amount or else, move on to another casino game.

Stop when you’ve exhausted your bankroll

One of the best advice we can give you, is to have a set bankroll before you start playing online slots. Once you’ve run out of money, don’t make any more deposits or go chasing after your losses. Slots tend to be highly volatile at times, so there is no guarantee that you will get all your money back. Remember, slot games are games of chance. Even if you had to employ the best strategy available out there, you have no guarantee of winning big.

Understanding casino slot paylines

Multi Payline Slots

Over the course of time, slot machines have developed to become one of the most popular casino games in the world, thanks to their easy as well as vibrant graphics, sounds, lights and much more. The atmosphere that slot machines create in land-based casinos is now rivalled by the high entertainment value of online casinos. Technological advancements have improved the appeal of online slots, paving the way for a massive evolution of online slots. Read on to learn more.

What are casino slot paylines?

A payline is essentially a betting line, whereby a combination of symbols falling on a line, can result in a win on a slot machine. In the very beginning, slot machines only had one payline, and you could only win if three matching symbols fell on a horizontal line. These days, slot games come with a multitude of paylines. You can look at the pay table before you start playing to figure out how many paylines the slot game has.  Better still, paylines aren’t available only horizontally but can be vertical and diagonal.

These days, most slot games come equipped between 25 and 30 paylines per slot. Paylines are the primary reasoning when a game developer creates the slot machine. Although some slots allow you to choose how many paylines to play, others allow you to play them all in one go (fixed).

You need to remember that every time you spin the reels and regardless of how many paylines there are available on a slot game, a payline will always come across an equal number of symbols.  So, if you are playing a 5-reel slot, the payline will feature 5 symbols.

Knowing how to pick a payline is vital when playing a slot game. Variable slots allow you to pick a number of paylines which are activated each time you spin the reels. If you are a beginner and are testing out a slot game, we recommend you pick 5 paylines or less to have better control of your bankroll. However, if you are after a jackpot, you might want to play as many paylines as possible.

How do paylines work?

Paylines are in general quite straightforward. They can be straight, diagonal, zig-zag shaped or else, run across the reels. Whichever the case, a winning payline will only pay if you have placed a bet on it.

Some slot machines have adjustable paylines, while others have fixed paylines only. Adjustable slots allow you to specify the number of paylines you want to bet on, while fixed payline slots accept bets on all or nothing.

What are the winning chances of paylines?

When it comes to placing bets on paylines, you can set up your own strategy that can help roll in the money. The number of paylines on an online slot will have a considerable effect on your bankroll, winnings as well as fun factor, depending on how much you want to play with. If a slot game has 10 winning paylines, and you want to place a bet of €0.02 per payline, it will cost you €0.20 per spin.

If, on the other hand, you want to place a bet on all the paylines, you can boost your chances of winning considerably. Just keep in mind that some slot games have fixed paylines, which would require you to bet on all of the paylines. The less paylines you play, the less chances of winning you have. On the bright side, each spin would cost less.

Another important point to remember is that when you check whether you have a winning combination on a payline, you must remember that some slot paylines only pay for winning combinations from left to right. There are other slots which also pay a winning combination regardless of the direction. If you have a winning combination on a payline you are betting on but you have not been paid, then it usually means that the symbols have not lined up.

To make sure that you achieve the best possible wins and payouts, you should have a look at the paytable, on the main gaming screen. You will find information regarding paylines, odds, winning combinations and much more on the start screen.

Slot Machine Strategies That Don’t Work

slot machine

Here are a few of the strategies that are touted as winning techniques on the Internet. Some of them are obviously ludicrous, while some of them seem to make sense but fall apart when examined with cold hard logic.

The zig zag system is one of my favorite nonsensical strategies. The idea is that you look at the reels at the various machines in an attempt to find a pattern. For example, you want to find a “V” shape or an “X” shape being drawn by any particular symbol. The idea is that such a machine is ready to pay off soon.

Of course, when you understand that the symbols on the reels are just for show, the entire strategy breaks down completely. Slot machines never become ready to pay off. Every spin is an independent event.

Money management systems are often touted as a way to make sure that you’re a winner, but the reality is much different. The idea behind money management is that you set win goals and loss limit. The goal is to limit the amount of money you lose when the machines are cold, and to quit while you’re ahead when the machines are hot.

Of course, we understand that slot machines don’t really get hot or cold, so in the long run, any type of money management scheme is irrelevant.

Often, money management techniques are combined with methods of predicting whether or not a slot machine game is hot or cold. Author John Patrick has an entire book of strange-sounding “strategies” based on this combination.

One of these is called “the straight 60” strategy. The idea is that you’ll walk away from the slot machine once you’ve either won or lost 60% of your bankroll. The other stipulation in this system is that once you’ve had 9 naked pulls, you’ll also walk away. (A “naked pull” is one in which you win absolutely nothing on that spin.)

So, for example, suppose you start with a session bankroll of $25. You’ll play until you’ve done one of the following:

  1. Lost $15.
  2. Won $15.
  3. Lost on 9 consecutive spins.

Honestly, that’s a pretty simple system, and remembering it and putting it into practice is a no-brainer. But the idea that it’s going to help you win more money and/or lose less money is ludicrous. Nothing about the system changes the odds in your favor.

Another system from that same book is called the “play and run” system. The idea behind this system is that you don’t spend more than 5 or 10 minutes at each slot machine game, then you run off with your winnings. Patrick suggests that you divide your bankroll into 5 or 10 sessions of 5 or 10 minutes each. Like all of his systems, you quit on any machine when you hit 9 naked pulls.

How anyone could think that this strategy would help them win more money playing slot machines is baffling.

Slot Machine Tips and Strategies

Now that we’ve discussed a few of the strategies on slot machine games that don’t work, let’s look at some real, hard-nosed, fact-based slot machine tips which might actually make a difference to your bankroll. These tips are all based on the realities of how these games actually work.

Tip #1 – Play for fun. The house has a mathematical edge, and you can’t beat it. So you should go into your gambling sessions expecting to lose, but hoping for the occasional win. Your goal should be to have some fun while you’re at it.

Tip #2 – Join the slots club. Almost all casinos have loyalty bonuses, rebates, and rewards for players who patronize their establishments. They provide you with a card to insert into the machine so that they can track how much action you’ve bought to the casino. They then return a tiny percentage (something like 0.1% or 0.2%) to you in the form of rebates, food, travel benefits, and entertainment.

One slot machine myth you should ignore is that slots pay out less when you’re playing with your slot card inserted. That’s just nonsense. We discussed how the random number generator works earlier.

Tip #3 – Skip the progressives, unless you’re determined to win a life-changing amount. Since the potential rewards on progressive slot machines are so high, the machines pay out less often. They have to in order to afford the rare huge jackpot. For the casual gambler, playing a machine with lower jackpots provides more opportunities to win, even though the winnings are smaller.

On the other hand, if you’re determined to win a million dollars, stick with the progressives. Just understand that you’re still unlikely to change your life with a huge slot machine jackpot. The odds are similar to those of winning the lottery.

Tip #4 – Don’t play with the rent money. This should be common sense, but if you’re gambling with money you can’t afford to lose, then you have a problem and should seek professional help of some kind. You cannot play slots professionally.

Tip #5 – Try video poker. These games are similar to slot machine games, but they provide better payout percentages and an opportunity to use strategy to improve your chances. Video poker isn’t for everybody, but I know lots of slots players who’ve made the switch once they tried it.

Tip #6 – Slow down. Some slot machine players make 600 spins per hour or more. Keep this in mind though. The more action you bring to the casino, the more opportunities the house edge has to whittle away at your bankroll. So slow down. Talk to the gamblers next to you. Sip your drink between spins. Anything you can do to reduce the amount of money you’re putting into action each hour is going to make your bankroll last longer.

Tip #7 – Don’t play the slots at the airport. These are the worst games in town in any gambling destination. Wait until you get to the casino to play the slots, and your money will last longer, and you’ll improve your chances of winning.
